Each of these video packages is an application of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT; Johnson, 2004) with a couple being seen in private practice with Dr. Kathryn Rheem, LMFT. The first video package (sessions 1 – 5) is of the female partner’s Withdrawer Re-engagement, the first EFT Stage Two change event. The second video package (sessions 6 – 10) is his Pursuer Softening, the second Stage Two change event in EFT. Both change events are necessary to achieve the Stage Two goal of re-structuring the couple’s bond. This series starts with the first session of Stage Two.
Package 1 is five sessions focused on her withdrawer re-engagement. As she starts her re-engagement process, she reported feeling incapable of being there for him and that there wasn’t space in her marriage for her emotion. In these sessions, you’ll see her take many risks in sharing the moments when she felt the weight of his expectations and fear that she’ll be a disappointment and won’t get it right. You’ll see her paradigm shift as she makes more and more contact with her inner world, allows it to take up space in herself and in her marriage, and risks sharing it with him again and again.
Package 2 is five sessions focused on his pursuer softening. As she remains engaged, he stays longer in his primary emotion and takes many risks to reach for her from his more vulnerable feelings. You’ll see his process as he shifts his focus from her to his own inner world. You’ll see him find his courage to connect with his deeper pain again and again and then share with his wife. He reaches beautifully and she’s so responsive!
