While therapists often talk about the importance of emotion, we frequently aren’t comfortable with its explosive intensity, and, as a result, can be unsure of how best to respond when strong feelings are expressed in the consulting room. This workshop will teach techniques used in Emotionally Focused Therapy to help you stay attuned to the flow of emotions, deepen them, and use your own emotional responses to help your clients more fully experience what’s going on. We’ll explore how to map primary and secondary emotions and discuss how an understanding of Attachment Theory can guide therapy. You’ll learn a skill set for helping clients access and regulate emotion emphasizing the three S’s---speaking slowly, softly, and simply---and leave with the tools to set up enactments of primary emotions that encourage partners to reconnect and rebuild their bonds.
Kathryn will be doing this one day presentation at the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium, Sunday March 25,2012 in Washington DC.
